How to Use Your SNAP Benefits
In Ohio, you swipe your Ohio Direction Card (SNAP/EBT) at the farmers' market information booth to receive wooden tokens. You spend these tokens with eligible vendors. Many Ohio markets also offer a dollar-for-dollar match program to instantly double your purchasing power for fresh produce.
Using SNAP at Ohio farmers' markets involves a simple, step-by-step process:
Find the Market Booth: Locate the central market manager’s table before you start shopping.
Swipe and Receive Tokens: Tell the staff how much you want to spend. They will swipe your Ohio Direction Card on an EBT machine and hand you wooden tokens (typically in $1 increments).
Shop: Use the tokens just like cash to buy eligible items (produce, meat, dairy, bread, and food-producing plants) directly from approved vendors.
Get a Match (Produce Perks): At over 130 participating locations statewide, you can take advantage of the Produce Perks Midwest program. When you use your SNAP card, the market will match your withdrawal dollar-for-dollar (up to $25 per visit) in extra tokens strictly for fresh fruits and vegetables.
Good to Know:
Tokens never expire, and any unused tokens can be saved for a future market trip.
If you have leftover tokens, you can also return them to the booth for a refund back to your EBT card before you leave.
Over 112 farmers' markets across Ohio participate in this program. You can find participating locations near you using the official Ohio Department of Job and Family Services market directory.
