Downtown Cleveland, Inc. Appoints Nicole A. Carlton VP of Public Safety

Following Improvement District Renewal, Veteran City of Cleveland Public Safety Leader to Advance Safety and Quality of Life and Expand Smart Technology

Downtown Cleveland, Inc. today announced the appointment of Nicole A. Carlton, a 32-year City of Cleveland public-safety leader, as Vice President of Public Safety. In this role, Carlton will offer concierge-style public safety services, acting as a trusted point of contact for property owners, businesses and residents. She will work closely with officials to address challenges, resolve concerns and strengthen downtown’s sense of security.

“Nicole brings unmatched expertise in emergency management, community engagement and large-scale event coordination, making her an invaluable addition to the team. As a downtown resident, she understands that strong neighborhoods begin with safety,” said Michael Deemer, President and CEO of Downtown Cleveland. “With her at the helm, we will seamlessly coordinate with city, county and public safety partners to create a more vibrant, inviting and secure downtown”

Carlton began working for the City of Cleveland in 1993 as an emergency medical technician and advanced to Commissioner of Emergency Medical Service, where she modernized emergency response systems and expanded public-health education programs. Carlton later served as Assistant Director of Public Safety, where she strengthened citywide preparedness, event coordination and expanded the Safe Smart CLE Camera Sharing Program.

Serving as Downtown Cleveland’s public safety liaison, Carlton will be the primary contact for city, county, state and federal partners; build joint strategies with law enforcement, emergency services and public works; and work directly with property owners, businesses and residents to anticipate issues and resolve them quickly.

She will also expand the smart camera network, strengthen monitoring, utilize analytics and field reports to deploy resources, track outcomes and improve situational awareness. Those insights will guide programming locations and support, so events remain well positioned and protected.
